Industrial Concentration in India
ISID organised a Research Seminar on “Industrial Concentration in India” on May 16, 2025. The seminar explored industrial concentration in India, highlighting variations across sectors and metrics, and discussed its implications for inequality and policy. The session was chaired by Prof Aditya Bhattacharjea, Visiting Professor, ISID, and featured presentations by Prof Subhashish Gupta, Professor, IIM Bangalore, and Dr Gaurav S Ghosh, J P Morgan Chase & Co. Distinguished panellists included Dr Augustine Peter, Former Member, Competition Commission of India; Prof Pulak Mishra, Professor, IIT Kharagpur; and, Dr Beena Saraswathy, Assistant Professor, ISID.

Abstract: Industrial concentration is an issue that has attracted attention in recent years, particularly as a source of inequality. This paper investigates concentration in India using a standard measure of concentration: the Herfindahl-Hirschman Index using data from the CMIE Prowess database from 2011–12 till 2021–22. We calculate HHI at different levels of NIC classification using income, assets and the sum of assets and income. We find differences across industries based on levels of aggregation and variables used to measure HHI. We also find variability in concentration over time. We construct a measure of aggregate concentration and note the pitfalls of such a measure. Concentration has remained fairly steady over the years of our study.
