Institute for Studies in Industrial Development  (ISID) invites applications for admission to the PhD programme in Economics and Public Policy. This is a full-time programme. Candidates having post-graduation degree or equivalent degree in Economics, Development Economics, Business Economics, Econometrics, Public Policy, Finance, Management, and related disciplines can apply. The programme is focused on industrial development and related public policy. ISID PhD Programme is duly recognised by Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), New Delhi.

About ISID

ISID, established in 1986, is a public-funded research institute sponsored by the Indian Council of Social Science Research (ICSSR), Ministry of Education, Government of India. It focuses on research in the area of industrial development.

Library

The Institute’s library serves as the resource centre in the field of industrial development and is a gateway to national and global knowledge providing fair access to knowledge and information to as many users as possible. It is an integral part of the institution providing efficient and timely support to the institute’s faculties, researchers, scholars, as well as to policy makers, administrators, and students from all over the country. Over the years, the library has functioned as a target-oriented library on literature related to issues such as industrial and developmental economics, foreign investment, international trade, innovation, corporate sector, labour, employment, and related subjects. It has an impressive, mixed collection of both print and electronic resources including books, journals, technical reports, thesis, databases, and other material. Reports of official committees, policy notifications, and other public documents are regularly obtained.

Other Facilities

ISID occupies an iconic campus located in the serene surroundings of the Aravalli Biodiversity Park in the Vasant Kunj Institutional Area. Besides faculty and staff offices, the campus is equipped with a top of the range convention centre, guest rooms and recreation facilities. The campus is easily accessible by road, metro, rail.

About PhD Programme

The programme has a focus on industrial development and related public policy and aims to contribute towards the creation of much needed expertise in the country in this area. The research scholars will have the choice of deciding their research topics in alignment with the expertise and research interests of ISID faculty members. Duration of the Programme

The essential requirements of the programme are a course work of two semesters of total 16 credits and PhD dissertation. The minimum duration of the programme is three years and maximum duration is six years. Relaxation to this condition is permissible as per the UGC guidelines.

Eligibility

ISID follows the University Grants Commission (UGC) guidelines for the PhD programme. Accordingly, those who have completed one year (two semesters) Master’s Degree programme after a four years (eight semesters) Bachelor’s Degree programme or two years (four semesters) Master’s Degree programme after a three years (six semesters) Bachelor’s Degree programme, in disciplines mentioned above are eligible to apply.

Those who await their results may also apply. However, they need to update the application once the results are announced.

PhD through Part-time mode

Admission to the programme through part-time mode, for candidates who are employed, will be permitted provided that all the conditions stipulated for the full time PhD programme are fulfilled. The candidates are required to produce a No Objection Certificate from the employer clearly stating that:

  1. The candidate is permitted to pursue studies on a part-time basis.
  2. Her/his official duties permit her/him to devote sufficient time for research.
  • If required, he/she will be relieved from the duty to complete the course work.

Procedure for Admission

ISID follows the UGC guidelines for the admission of candidates to the PhD Programme. Accordingly, following categories of candidates are eligible to apply.

Category 1: JRF Qualified

Category 2: NET Score based (1. JRF qualified candidates, 2. Candidates qualified for Assistant Professorship without JRF, and 3. Candidates neither qualified for JRF nor for Assistant Professorship but eligible for admission to PhD on the basis of NET score).

Admission to PhD Programme (2024-25) will be done on the basis of score of UGC-NET examination of June 2024 (to be held in August-September 2024). The NET scores of previous years/tests shall not be valid/used for PhD admission for the academic year 2024-25. There is no change in the validity period of JRFs and it will continue as before.

Admission under category 1 will be based on the performance in the interview, where 100% weightage will be assigned to marks obtained in the interview.

Admission under category 2 will be based on the NET score and performance in the interview, where 70% weightage is assigned to NET score and 30% weightage assigned to marks obtained in the interview.

Research Proposal and Interview

Candidates are required to submit a research proposal in not more than 2000 words along with the application. The proposal is expected to reflect critical understanding of the body of knowledge in the proposed research area and research objectives. Applications without research proposal will not be considered.

Shortlisted candidates will be called for the interview. The interview will focus on assessing the competence of the candidate to undertake independent research work.

Confirmation of Admission

A candidate’s admission to the PhD programme will be confirmed if:

  1. The candidate completes the course work with minimum required marks.
  2. The candidate’s research proposal is approved by the PhD Research Advisory Committee of ISID. The candidates are required to get their research proposals approved by this Committee within one year of completion of their course work.

Names of those candidates who do not fulfil the above two requirements will be removed from the rolls.

Fellowships

The PhD students who are eligible for JRF, can avail the fellowship after joining the programme. Research scholars can apply for ICSSR doctoral fellowships. Those students not having any fellowship, will be provided with ISID PhD Fellowship of Rs. 10,000 per month for local students and Rs. 15,000 per month of outstation students for a period of maximum three years.

Research Assistance Opportunities

PhD students will be provided with research assistantships, as per the UGC guidelines, to expose them to research projects.

Fees

There is an application fee of Rs. 500 for general category candidates and Rs. 250 for women candidates and candidates belonging to SC/ST/OBC (NCL)/EWS/Differently Abled categories. The application fee is to be deposited in the ISID bank account, details of which are given below. Candidates are required to mention the transaction reference number of fee deposit in the application form.

There will be a semester fee of Rs. 10,000, which is inclusive of all kinds of fees.
