Jesim Pais works on issues related to Industry and Employment. His PhD is from the Indira Gandhi Institute of Development Research (IGIDR), Mumbai. He has also worked at the Indian Statistical Institute, Kolkata.

His previous research work includes a study of the leather accessories manufacture in Dharavi, Mumbai, village surveys in Theni, Tamil Nadu, Beedi industry in Murshidabad, West Bengal.

The areas of research interest are Labour and Industry Regulations; the Informal Sector and the Unorganised Sector (employment and enterprises); Small-scale industrialisation; issues of employment including labour productivity, wages rates and minimum wages, work place and working conditions. Linkages between the formal and informal sectors; between large and small industry and finally between the state and informal enterprises.

Also of research interest: Survey based studies of industry, working and living conditions.
