Profile

Dr Atulan Guha is a young development economist with around five years of experience in research and advisory assignments. He specialises in the areas of international macroeconomics, trade policy, industrial economics, labour and employment, development planning, regional development.

Dr Guha has completed his Masters, M.Phil. and Ph.D. in Economics from Center for Economic Studies and Planning, Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi. He also attended Seventh Cambridge Advanced Programme on ‘Rethinking Development', University of Cambridge.

He has been faculty in Institute for Studies in Industrial Development from November, 2002 onwards. In between he was technical consultant to Kerala State Planning Board. He was member of the Plan Committee on Industries for 11th five year Plan, Kerala State Planning Board. Also he has worked as member-convenor of the Working Group on Special Economic Zones for 11th five year plan, Kerala State Planning Board.

  • "Evolution of Indian Organised Manufacturing Industrial Structure: A Comparison between Liberalised and Pre-liberalised Regimes", a paper presented for the conference organised in Honour of Prof. S.K. Goyal, by the ISID on June 27-28, 2008.
  • "India and China: Trade Complementarities and Competitiveness" by Dr T.P. Bhat, Atulan Guha and Mahua Paul, Bookwell, New Delhi.
  • A paper on “Exchange Rate Movement in Developing Countries: An Alternative Theoritical Framework”, submitted to Contribution to Political Economy.
  • “Exchange Rate Management in Gold Standard Era: A Historical Overview” Economic and Political Weekly November 10-23, 2007, Vol. 42, No. 45-46, pp. 67-72.

  • Labour Market Flexibilty in Indian Manufacturing: An empirical enquiry into Neo-Liberal Propositions” forthcoming in the conference volume of International conference on Development in Open Economies: Labour in Industry [A conference funded by the Indo-Dutch Programme on Alternative Development], Academy of Third World Studies, Jamia Millia Islamia, New Delhi.

The areas on which he is presently working are --

  • Critical Examination of Export-led growth strategy of India — Presented a paper on 3.04.2007 titled “Import-Intensities and Exports: Experiences of Indian Manufacturing in 90s” in conference on India’s Foreign Policy: Emerging trends in the New Century organised by University of Kerala.
  • Indian Growth in last 25 years: Its Structure, Reasons and Sustainability, presented a paper on Febrauary 23, 2007, titled “Indian Growth in last 25 years: A Dissection” in conference on India Independent Economic, Politics, Culture, organised by Social Scientist, New Delhi.
  • Formulating an alternative industrial policy framework for Indian States.
